Authority: Flooding situation in Thailand improving

BANGKOK, August 22 (TNA) - Thailand's National Disaster Warning Centre reported Monday that the country's flooding situation has been improving, with floods mostly threatening downstream areas now.

National Disaster Warning Centre Director Somsak Khaosuwan acknowledged that the downstream areas being flooded or at risk of inundations over the coming days, from Thailand's lower northern Pitsanulok Province to central region, are caused by releases of upstream water through the Sirikit Dam, at which the water level now stands around 88 per cent of the full capacity. Group Captian Somsak affirmed that the Sirikit Dam has remained safe.

The National Disaster Warning Centre chief, however, warned people in the Thai East to brace for more heavy downpours over the next couple of days and to closely follow up the updated situation. (TNA)
