Floods continue to trouble Thai North, Northeast

BANGKOK, August 22 (TNA) - The flood situation in many northern and northeastern Thai provinces has continued to hinder local livelihoods.

In Chiang Rai Province, over 1,000 families in Mae Chan and Chiang Saen Districts were affected by flooding caused by the recent tropical storm Nock-ten. Three schools, three temples and many roads remain submerged under over one-metre deep floodwaters. Meanwhile, strong currents eroded the Kham River banks, flooding vast areas of paddy fields.

In Phitsanulok Province, the water level in the Nan River on the section passing through city center rose by as much as 20 centimeters above the safe level, prompting workers from Muang Phitsanulok Municipality to install water pumps in the provincial main business areas to prevent flooding.

In Lamphun Province, more water pumps were set up along Chalermphrakiat Bridge to accelerate water drainage from the provincial center after three days of inundations.

In Sukhothai Province, floods were receding. The level of the Yom River subsided by nearly 10 centimeters from its level on Sunday. However, four low-lying villages in Muang Sukhothai District remain submerged under more than 2-meter deep floods.

Frog farmers in Ang Thong Province also complained of destruction to their farms, while people in the Old Kabin Buri market of Prachin Buri province feared the inflow of waste water and garbage from the week’s flooding would cause disease outbreaks. (TNA)
