NESBD: Thailand’s 2011 GDP growth forecast at 3.5-4 percent

BANGKOK, August 22 (TNA) - Secretary General of the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) Arkhom Termpittayapaisith says Thailand’s GDP growth in 2011 is forecast at 3.5-4 percent, down from 3.5-4.5 percent.

Arkhom said the figure was adjusted after the country’s GDP growth fell to 2.6 percent in Q2 of 2011, from 3.2 percent in Q1 of 2011, due to a reduction in household consumption and investments.

He said the NESDB also revised up its 2011 inflation forecast to 4 percent from 3.8 percent, taking into account the rising price of oil, the delay in the drawing up of the 2012 budget, risks caused by debt problems in Spain, Italy, Greece, and the U.S., and the baht appreciation.

However, the NESDB Secretary General added that the 0.2 percent increase in inflation did not take into account the policies to increase the minimum wage to 300 baht per day and, for bachelor degree holders, the minimum salary to 15,000 baht per month. (TNA)
