First batch of Thai soldiers returns home from Darfur

BANGKOK, August 21 (TNA) - The first batch of Thai soldiers who took part in the peace-keeping missions of the United Nations (UN) in Darfur region of Sudan has already returned to Thailand.

Army chief-of-staff Dapong Ratanasuwan presided over a reception ceremony to welcome 201 soldiers of the Thai-Dafur Task Force 980 Sunday morning.

At the ceremony, General Dapong expressed his deep appreciation for the soldiers’ peace-keeping work in Sudan, saying that Thai people are proud of them and that the UN and Sudanese people have hailed the Thai task force for applying His Majesty the King’s sufficiency economy in their operation.

General Dapong also expressed his condolence to the family members of Chief Petty Officer Phi-phat-phum Sri-khad-khao who died of malaria in Sudan. He said his body is currently undergoing autopsy and will be sent back home within next week.

All soldiers who arrived Sunday have had their blood tested. They are also advised to monitor their own health conditions closely. More soldiers of the Task Force 980 will arrive on August 24, 26 and 28, having already finished their nine-month peace-keeping missions in Darfur.

Last Friday, Army chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha presided over the send-off ceremony of the second batch of the Thai-Dafur Task Force 980 to Sudan.

The second batch, which is tasked to assist in the UN peace-keeping missions in Sudan for six months, comprises of 812 soldiers under the supervision of the 3rd Army. (TNA)
