PRESIDENT WANTS COUNTRY TO PERFORM BETTER IN FARM PRODUCT TRADING
Tasikmalaya, Indonesia, Sept 19 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said he has asked the agriculture and trade ministries to take prompt steps to improve the country's performance in farm product trading, particularly in export terms.
Speaking in a dialog with farmers and livestock breeders at Pamayongan village, Tasikmalaya district, on Friday, Yudhoyono said he would ask Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu to take steps to improve conditions in the farm products trade.
"We will consider inputs from all of you. We will ask the trade minister to follow up on the inputs so the prices of our farm products will improve," he said in reply to a question from Masykur Malik of the Al Idris Islamic boarding school at Cisayang village.
"Admittedly, our farmers do make profits. But businessmen reap much bigger profits. We hope there will be regulations on this matter," Masykur said referring to shrimp local breeders were selling to Singapore businessmen.
The head of state further said Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono met with officials from a number of European countries some time ago to discuss the quota for Indonesian farm products exported to the continent.
Indonesia considered the quota unfair, he said.
In the dialog, Yudhoyono also touched on the goverment's plan to make the country self sufficient in rice, soybean, beef, corn and sugar.
"That's why farmers are playing a very important role. Both the central and regional governments will assist them so we will together achieve these goals," he said.
Yudhoyono was here as part of his Ramadhan safari.
At 10.35 a.m., the president and entourage including Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Widodo AS, Agriculture Minister Anton Apriyantono, Health Minister Siti Fadila Supari and Minister of Cooperatives and Small Businesses Suryadharma Ali proceeded to Bandung, capital of West Java province.
Also present at the dialog were West Java Governor Ahmad Heryawan and Tasikmalaya district head Tatang Farhanul Hakim.
