New Thai PM pushes for 300-baht minimum wage plan

BANGKOK, August 20 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra says she is ready to elaborate on her 300-baht minimum wage plan in her policy statement to the parliament.
Yingluck made the remarks on Friday after Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Kittirat Na-Ranong commented that the wage hike policy could possibly be called off. Yingluck insisted that she will push for the policy’s implementation and will soon convene all parties concerned on the issue.
Yingluck explained that there were many approaches to carrying out the wage hike, whether phase-by-phase or in one period; however, saying she will work out the most feasible method to minimize impacts on concerned parties and business operators.
On benefits, she said the wage hike will accompany a rise in labour skills and qualifications, which will in turn create a highly-capable workforce for business needs.
Regarding the Democrat Party’s plan to impeach Foreign Minister Surapong Towijakchaikul for his alleged role in aiding former premier Thaksin Shinawatra’s entry into Japan, Yingluck said the issue would be handled in compliance with normal procedures, and her government would do its best to clarify the facts.
The Thai premier also disapproved saying that Surapong was the wrong pick for the new foreign minister post, saying she would like to see him work first. (TNA)
