EXPLOSION AT PLAZA INDONESIA NOT FROM BOMB: MANAGEMENT
Jakarta, Sept 19 (ANTARA) - The management of the Plaza Indonesia shopping center in central Jakarta admitted an explosion had occurred at the building's ground level on Friday morning but gave the asssurance it was not a bomb or terrorist act.
"The explosion was really an accident and not caused by a bomb or a terrorist act," said PLaza Indonesia Director M Sjohirin.
He said the explosion at the Imperial Treasure restaurant at 00.10 local time happened when an analog gas meter was being replaced with a digital one.
In the replacement process, a leak developed in the gas pipe and the explosion took place when the escaped gas came into contact with air, he said.
The explosion site had now been isolated by a yellow police line.
Police were still investigating the cause of the explosion which injured seven people three of whom had to be rushed to the nearest hospital where they were admitted to the intensive care unit.
Central Jakarta Police chief Senior Commissioner Ike Edwin had earlier said police had so far questioned four people as witneses.
