Gold trade hits new record at Thai-Cambodian border

BANGKOK, August 20 (TNA) - Rising gold prices in the world market has caused gold trade at the Thai-Cambodian border in Chanthaburi province to reach its 10-year high, driven by a huge sell-off by Cambodians.

Vice president of the local Thai-Cambodian Border Trade and Tourism Association Sombat Juengtrakul said the surging gold price prompted many Cambodians to travel into Chanthaburi to sell and exchange gold bars and gold ornaments, with many coming from as far as the capital Phnom Penh. He noted that the prices of gold ornaments in Cambodia were cheaper than those in Thailand by 600 baht per baht-weight.

Sombat quoted local gold businesses as saying gold trade reached its highest level in a decade, and that over 8 million baht changed hands in the past two days. (TNA)
