Second batch of Thai peace keepers leave for Sudan

BANGKOK, August 20 (TNA) - The second contingent of the “Thai-Darfur 980 ad hoc unit” has left Thailand for Sudan, to replace the first batch of Thai troops on a joint UN humanitarian mission.
Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha presided over the deployment of Thai peacekeepers on Saturday morning, urging them to act boldly and to be cautious against Malaria following the death of a Thai soldier from the disease there.
The second contingent comprised 812 officers from the 3rd Army Area Command who would station in Darfur over the next six months for the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur or UNAMID.
Thai troops would be tasked with conducting security patrols, protecting civilians, UN staff and facilities, as well as providing medical services to complement the peace process in Darfur.
