Security authorities visit Thai soldiers at border

BANGKOK, August 19 (TNA) - Newly-appointed Thai Defence Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapa and Thai Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha visited Thai soldiers at the Thai-Cambodian border near the Preah Vihear Temple in Thailand's northeastern Si Sa Ket Province on Friday.
Before leaving for Si Sa Ket, General Prayuth said that he and the new Thai defence minister would give morale support to the Thai army and air force officers who have devoted themselves to national defence, and that the new Thai defence minister would also be briefed on developments along the Thai-Cambodian border.
General Prayuth acknowledged that Thailand and Cambodia would have a meeting of their secretarial staffs of the Regional Border Committee (RBC) from August 23-25, prior to the RBC meeting set from August 26-27--during which Thailand's Commanding General of the 2nd Army Area Command will meet Cambodia's 4th Army chief.
The Thai army chief said that about 15 issues will be on their agenda, and that the Thai Cabinet and the House of Representatives will consider topics which require their prior approval.
The Thai army commander-in-chief also revealed that Bangkok and Phnom Penh will also have a meeting of their General Border Committee (GBC) in the near future. Both Thailand and Cambodia have claimed ownership on a 4.6-square-kilometre area surrounding the Preah Vihear Temple and attempts have been sought to settle the key border issue. (TNA)
