Thai PM sets up war room to monitor widespread floods

BANGKOK, August 18 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said on Thursday that her government is setting up a war room to keep a close watch on widespread floods in the country currently and to assess updated developments for immediate actions and solutions.

Yingluck told reporters that she has instructed agencies concerned to dispatch their teams to inspect and take care of flood-stricken areas and victims, particularly those being at risk most or those hardest hit now in the country's central and northeastern regions and will also call a teleconference with governors of all flood-hit provinces on August 20 to discuss measures to urgently and effectively solve flood-related problems.

The first female Thai premier expressed concerns over, probably, more downpours in several areas in the coming days caused by a low pressure mass and a contingent plan announced by the Royal Irrigation Department to release upstream water into some central provinces, namely Angthong and Ayutthaya, to help cater floodwater temporarily and to ease inundations in more sensitive areas nearby, as both could worsen the flooding situation in critically-affected zones and could even threaten the country's other downstream areas.

The new Pheu Thai premier acknowledged that she is looking into details of the Royal Irrigation Department's short-run plan to ensure its limited impacts on people in the targeted flood-catering areas, and that she has assigned the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives to urgently work out and hand out financial assistance and compensations to the flood victims.

The newly-elected Thai premier also vowed to introduce long term measures to resolve the country's repeated floods, based on a thorough and discreet scrutiny of all relevant factors systematically, including a nationwide water management master plan and the possibly construction of the proposed Kaen Sua Ten Dam.
