Thai defense minister, military chief visit the far South

BANGKOK, August 18 (TNA) - New Minister of Defense General Yutthasak Sasiprapa and Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha visited Thailand’s southernmost border provinces to follow up operations to address insurgency issues.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, General Prayuth reaffirmed the military had no objection against the Pheu Thai Party-led government to develop the three southernmost border provinces namely Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat, as a special administrative zone, and was ready to support it as long it helped to improve the situation in the restive south.

Nevertheless, General Prayuth noted that the detail of the policy must be discussed rationally.

During their southern trip, the two defense chiefs would also convene with local security officials at the southern outpost of the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC) to hand down new policies. They would also travel to Yala Province to visit Thai Muslims during their Ramadan month. (TNA)
