Korean War monument to be unveiled in Australia

SEOUL, Aug. 18 (Yonhap) -- A monument honoring Australian soldiers who fell during the 1950-53 Korean War will be unveiled later this week in the Australian state of Queensland, officials said Thursday.
South Korea's Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and the state government of Queensland have jointly funded to set up the monument since 2008.
About 600 people, including government officials and veterans from the two nations, will attend the unveiling ceremony scheduled for Saturday at the Cascade Gardens of Gold Coast, Queensland, the Korean ministry said in a statement.
The Australian government plans to designate the Cascade Gardens as a national memorial park, it said.
A total of 17,164 Australian soldiers served during the Korean War, with 339 of them sacrificing their lives, according to the ministry data.
The Korean War broke out on June 25, 1950 when tank-led North Korean troops invaded South Korea. Twenty-one allied countries fought on the side of South Korea under the U.N. flag. The conflict ended in a cease-fire three years later.
