Thai soldier dies of malaria during Darfur peace-keeping mission

BANGKOK, August 17 (TNA) - A Thai soldier has passed away after suffering from severe malaria during his peace-keeping mission in Darfur, Sudan.

On Wednesday, Commander of the Thai-Darfur 980 ad hoc unit Colonel Narong Suankaew held a video conference with Deputy Army Chief General Theerawat Bunyapradap, to report on the death of Navy Chief Petty Officer Phiphatphum Srikhadkhao.

According to the report, the United Nations would transport the body of the deceased navy officer back to Thailand within the next few days.

Colonel Narong also reported on preparations for the transfer of humanitarian missions to Lieutenant Colonel Narongrit Panikabut, commander of the second batch of Thai soldiers to be deployed in Darfur, on August 22.

The incoming second batch would comprise at least 812 soldiers from the 1st Infantry Battalion of the 7th Infantry Regiment in the Kawila camp of Chiang Mai province, as well as from the Royal Thai Armed Forces Headquarters, the Navy and the Air Force.

Meanwhile, some 203 Thai soldiers currently deployed in Darfur had relocated from Mukjar to Nyala locality pending their return trip to Thailand on August 20 and 21. (TNA)
