GOVT URGED TO TAKE MORE RESOLUTE ACTION AGAINST AHMADIYAH

Jakarta, Sept 19 (ANTARA) - A legislator of the Muslim-based Star and Crescent Party (PBB) said here Friday the issuance of a joint decree of three ministers on Ahmadiyah had not solved the problem and therefore the government should be more resolute and ban the Islamic sect.
House of Representatives (DPR) member Ali Mochtar Ngabalin was referring to a decree signed by the religious affairs and home affairs ministers and Attorney General forbidding Ahmadiyah to propagate its teachings in the country but not outright ordering it to disband.
"The joint ministerial decree has not solved the problem and to Muslims it has even created a 'time-bomb' that can explode any time because Ahmadiyah still exists," Ngabalin said.
Therefore, he added, the government should adopt a more resolute stand and take action to ban ihe sect's existence on Indonesian soil for the sake of preserving national unity.
Ngabalin made the statements in a discussion on and the launch of a book titled "Menusuk Ahmadiyah" (Stabbing Ahmadiyah) written by intelligence affairs observer Dr Wawan H Purwanto.
Other speakers at the discussion included People's Conscience (Hanura) Party associate chairman Ibrahim Abdullah and Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) figure Habib Ali Alwi Al Huseini.
Meanwhile, Wawan H Purwanto said certain big powers were behind Ahmadiyah which had spread its wings in about 140 countries around the world.
He said the government seemed to have taken too many things into consideration and was late in making a final decision about the sect which had existed in Indonesia for 75 years.
"But I respect the joint ministerial decree. The important thing is that its implementation should be closely monitored in an effort to make Ahmadiyah followers return to the right path," Purannto said.
NU figure Alwi Al Huseini said where religious matters were concerned, the government should leave decision-making to Muslim scholars grouped in the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).
"MUI has already issued a fatwa (edict) declaring Ahmadiyah a deviant and misguided sect, so what the government can do is only respecting this fatwa," Huseini said.
