National park chief transferred for illegal logging

SURIN, August 17 (TNA) - Director-General of Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Sunant Arunnopparat has transferred the chief of the Phujong-Nayoi National Park after a recent discovery of huge amounts of illegally uprooted Siamese rosewood timbers there.

Sunant confirmed the transfer order on Wednesday, saying the action was taken after authorities discovered the illegally logged rosewood trees from the Phanom Dong Rak mountain range in Thailand’s lower northeast border with Cambodia.

According to the senior official, the logs, worth an estimated 1.9 billion baht, were destined to be sold in exchange for illicit drugs. He added that about fifty percent of local school students there were also believed to work for illegal loggers in exchange for drugs.

The Phanom Dong Rak mountain range along the Thai-Cambodian and the Thai-Lao borders was known as Thailand’s only source for Siamese rosewood, a luxury timber highly-regarded in furniture-making. (TNA)
