BOT governor says inflation targeting does not hinder economic growth

BANGKOK, August 17 (TNA) - Governor of the Bank of Thailand (BOT) Prasarn Trairatworakul says he will not express his opinion on the Finance Ministry’s policy to increase the inflation target and to keep interest rates low until he discusses the policy with the Finance Minister Teerachai Poowanartnaranubal. He says expressing his opinion publicly will only make it harder for the policy to reach a conclusion.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Prasarn noted however, the country’s current inflation target between 0.5 to 3 percent was lawfully agreed upon by the previous cabinet and was not a hindrance to economic growth and domestic consumption. He added that investors were confident that the Thai economy would grow and they considered Thailand’s inflation policy trustworthy, particularly when compared to other ASEAN countries.

Prasarn further said that by the end of 2011, the Bank of Thailand would set a new inflation target for the year 2012, which would be submitted to the Finance Ministry and the cabinet for approval. (TNA)
