Charter changes included in new Thai government's policy statement

BANGKOK, August 17 (TNA) - New Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra affirmed Wednesday that her Pheu Thai government's policy statement to be presented to the Thai Parliament, most probably next week, includes proposed changes in the country's 2007 Constitution.

Yingluck insisted, however, that the proposed Charter amendments, particularly Article 291, is not mainly aimed to assist convicted ex-Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, her elder brother, but to revise the constitutional context for societal benefits, and that her administration will definitely allow public participation in the Charter changes.

The first female Thai premier dismissed reports that her Pheu Thai Party-led coalition government will push for the completion of the constitutional amendments within the next couple of months, but will, instead, allow the issue to go through normal parliamentary procedures.

The leading Thai business woman-turned-maiden prime minister also denied reports that Thaksin's planned visit to neighbouring Cambodia in the near future is aimed to represent her Pheu Thai government for talks on a proposed joint Thai-Cambodian energy investment project in the Gulf of Thailand.
