Three measures to alleviate drugs and crimes

BANGKOK, August 17 (TNA) - A recent survey on drug use among children and teenagers in Greater Bangkok found that between 202,000 and 327,000 children and teenagers, or 13.4 per cent of the total Thai population, used drugs, excluding those involving in alcohol and smoking cases.

The survey, conducted by Bangkok-based Assumption University, also known as the ABAC poll, from August 1-15 was based on 1,815 random samples aged 12-24 years old.

Regarding solutions to drug-related problems, Noppadol Kannika, Director of the ABAC Poll Center, suggested three measures.

The first is to create an online social network aimed at suppressing drugs and crimes, through which local police send text messages to people's mobile phones warning them of drug and crime threats and seeking their cooperation for anti-drug tip-offs.

The second is a large-scale drug search in every housing project and community, as well as schools in order to break up drug trafficking networks. The third is to reform the existing screening, rehabilitation and five-year following-up systems for drug users to be more practical and transparent to eliminate, probably, drug trafficking networks hidden inside rehabilitation facilities and to ensure their full-stop of drug use and threats to the society.
