Thailand’s southern violence links to drugs

BANGKOK, August 17 (TNA) - A Thai expert says examinations of forensic evidence of insurgency cases in Thailand’s far south have found that most of them were related to illegal activities, namely narcotics and oil smuggling.

The Thai expert, Dr. Khunying Pornthip Rojanasunand, Director of the Thai Ministry of Justice's Institute of Forensic Science, insisted that the forensic examinations of the violent cases in the far South have indicated both insurgency and the illegal activities were behind the violent attacks.

Khunying Pornthip acknowledged that the forensic evidence has assisted and supported local police to detect movements and arrests of suspects of the violent cases in Thailand's troubled southernmost region to a large extent.

Nevertheless, Khunying Pornthip advised that forensic investigations are to be performed with full caution and transparency and to be liaised with all security agencies concerned, namely police and soldiers, to ensure the safety of forensic officers tasked with separate violent cases. (TNA)
