Thailand preparing GBC meeting with Cambodia

BANGKOK, August 16 (TNA) - Newly-appointed Thai Defence Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapa said on Tuesday that he has received an invitation from his Cambodian counterpart General Tea Banh, who is also the Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister, for a new General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Cambodia early next month.

General Yuthasak told reporters that he has assigned the director-general of the Department of Border Affairs to prepare for the 8th Thai-Cambodian GBC meeting, saying that he expects a new Thai-Cambodian Regional Border Committee (RBC) meeting will be held as soon as possible to work out the framework of the forthcoming GBC meeting.

Regarding a plan earlier proposed by Phnom Penh on the deployment of third-party observers at a contentious area along the Thai-Cambodian border, General Yuthasak acknowledged that the Cambodian side has now suggested bilateral negotiations and it will inform the International Court of Justice (ICJ) of its changed stance.

According to the new Thai defence minister, after the bilateral negotiations, the Hague-based ICJ will be informed that Thailand and Cambodia will no longer need a third party as their mediator, as they can now negotiate bilaterally.

The new Thai defence minister said, however, that he will inspect the updated situation along the Thai-Cambodian border on August 19, noting that a plan on the withdrawal of both Thai and Cambodian border troops will be discussed later and it will be a reciprocal action. (TNA)
