Thai police arrest animal traffickers, confiscate over 1,300 wild animals

CHUMPHON, August 16 (TNA) - Border patrol police in Thailand's southern Chumphon Province have seized over 1,300 wild animals destined for neighboring countries, loaded on a pick-up truck.

Police Colonel Thawan Boonsong, Commander of the Chumphon Provincial Border Patrol Police Area 41, told reporters that his border patrol police team also arrested two animal traffickers during the operation on Asia 41 Road in Chumphon’s Muang District on Tuesday morning.

Police Colonel Thawan said that the raid resulted in the confiscation of a total of 1,365 wild animals, including some 760 river turtles-- Asian box turtle, black march turtle, Mekong snail-eating turtle -- and 605 Bengal monitors.

According to the senior Thai police officer, the traffickers confessed that they were hired to transport the wild animals from Thailand’s southern Songkhla Province to a suburban area in Bangkok, where the animals would then be transferred to another truck and transported across the Mekong River to be sold in neighboring countries.

The regional border police chief revealed that the traffickers have been charged with unlawful possession of wild live animals under Thailand's Wild Animal Preservation and Protection Act B.E. 2535 and have been detained for the prosecution. (TNA)
