Hair loss common after childbirth: Medical Experts
ISLAMABAD, August 15, 2011 (PPI): Women often see noticeable hair loss a few months after childbirth, which is normal that caused by falling estrogen levels in the body, revealed by Dr. Erum Bashir, Consultant Gynaecologist here Monday.
She said that the hair loss is temporary and patients do need any treatment. Most women usually return to their normal fullness by their child’s first birthday. Many women regain normal fullness even earlier.
For Dermatologists’ tips for new mothers when contacted with Dr. Saqib Khan, Consultant Dermatologist told PPI that the certain tips can help the women to regain their hairs to normal fullness.
Dr. Saqib advised that women should use those shampoos, which contain ingredients like protein that coat the hair, making the hair appear fuller.
He said that patient should avoid any shampoo labeled "conditioning shampoo" or intensive conditioners because they contain heavy conditioners that can weigh down the hair and make it look limp.
"Use a conditioner specially formulated for fine hair as it contains lighter formulas that will not weigh down hair," he added.
He advised that conditioner should be primarily used on the ends of your hair. "If the patient applies conditioner on the scalp then all hair tends to weigh down hair," he said.
Renowned hair stylist Zeeshan Qadus said that women should try a new hairstyle. "Some haircuts make hair look fuller," he added.
He said that many new mothers prefer short hair. A short style can make hair look fuller. Short hair also can be easier to manage, which can save time. With a baby, anything that saves time can be a real boon.
Dr. Asif Khan, Consultant Clinical Pharmacist said that many new mothers experience hair loss after childbirth. Hair loss usually peaks about four months after childbirth. By their child’s first birthday, most women regain their normal hair growth.
If patient’s hair does not regain its normal fullness after one year, one must consult with dermatologist.
"People lose hair for many reasons, and an accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment," he added.
