Kidnapped child recovered from professional beggars, NGO refers more cases for investigation
Karachi, August 15, 2011 (PPI): The city police raided a group of professional beggars to successfully and safely recover a kidnapped child, who was abducted by a mafia to use him for professional beggary. In a barbaric act, the child was disabled by the culprits.
Roshni Helpline - a NGO working for child rights had earlier drawn the attention of concerned authorities including police about its fears and suspicions regarding the kidnapping of children by such mafias. In line with these concerns, the Boat Basin police raided a group of professional beggars to recover an eight year old Muhammad Urs from their possession, who was kidnapped from Shah Rasool Colony in the limits of Boat Basin Police Station.
The police arrested one Rameez Gopang and started investigation. A FIR (131/2011) has been lodged by the police and inspector Mobin is heading the investigation.
"We have referred eight more cases of the registered missing children, which according to their age bracket (2-7 years) are more likely to be picked up by such groups for their evil purposes including beggary and we hope there are more leads and more recoveries," the Roshni Helpline President Muhammad Ali said. "We have written to the IO of the case that these cases too should be brought under the investigation from the accused in the aforementioned FIR. This will also give a broader view of the kidnapping of children by these groups in the city and their exploitation."
Ali said Roshni Helpline has informed the concerned authorities about the possibilities of these groups’ involvement in kidnapping and exploitation of children. This is proven by a couple of cases of recovered children in the past and by this one recently. Also, our clients - the parents and guardians of the missing children - have expressed their suspicions about the involvement of such groups. "We also suspect these groups involvement in the children abduction and kidnapping on the grounds that there is no control on their movement in the city. There is no registration and documentation of them. There should be some sort of tracking and check on the movement of such groups in the city."
He has requested the Inspector General of Police Sindh to increase information sharing between police stations on beggars and cases showing their involvement in children’s kidnapping at the provincial level so that level of interrogation could be broadened and recovery of the children be made possible.
He said the Roshni Helpline has planned a survey of these groups in collaboration with the Sindh Home Department, which we will start after month of Ramadan, because during this month the influx of beggars from outside the city increases and they move back to their home towns soon after. "We have suggested the Home Office for some sort of permanent mechanism for keeping a track on these groups, and the Consultant of the Department Sharfuddin Memon has expressed great interest and assured full cooperation in this regard."
