WB upgrades Thailand to higher-moderate GNI economy

BANGKOK, August 15 (TNA) - The World Bank has upgraded Thailand to be a nation with higher-moderate gross national income (GNI), thanks to the country's economic success with a firm fiscal status over the past decade.

Kirida Phaopijit, a World Bank senior economist for Southeast Asia, announced in Bangkok on Monday that as of July 1, 2011, the US-based World Bank has raised Thailand to now be among the world's higher-moderate GNI economies, with their yearly GNI per capital ranging between 3,976 – 12,275 US dollars or about 118,662-366,337 baht, based on its latest global assessment under the so-called Atlas Method, as the Kingdom's GNI per capita per annum has increased to 4,210 US dollars or some 125,756 baht currently.

Kirida acknowledged Thailand's economic success over the past 10 years--during which the country's yearly GNI per capita has doubled; while poverty has remarkable reduced due to its discreetly efficient macro-economic management with a firm fiscal status, and a favourable climate for growing exports and foreign direct investment (FDI) projects, but comparably low public debt and inflation.

The senior World Bank economist suggested, however, that Thailand further boost productivity and competitiveness of local manufacturing, service and farm sectors, through educational and skill enhancements, as well as creativities and innovations, to sustain national economic growth and developments in the long run, to further lift up its GNI per capita and to reduce income disparities among people of different sectors in the Thai society.
