Thai defence minister vows to protect royal institution

BANGKOK, August 15 (TNA) - Newly-appointed Defence Minister Yutthasak Sasiprapa has vowed to protect the royal institution, develop the armed forces, solve insurgency problems in the far South, and assist disaster victims.

General Yutthasak made the vow on Monday, noting that one of his top priorities was to promote and protect the royal institution. In his work for the institution, the minister also vowed to promote the sufficiency economy principle, national unity and understanding in the society in line with the royal intentions of by their Majesties the King and Queen.

He added that other important issues included the improvement of Thailand’s military capacity and the protection of the national sovereignty.

Furthermore, the defence minister promised to solve security problems in the country’s three southern border provinces, namely terrorism, transnational crimes, as well as to support disaster mitigation.

Regarding the Pheu Thai Party’s policy to develop the three southern border provinces as a special administrative zone, General Yutthasak said he would have to consult with all concerned parties before making a decision on the issue. (TNA)
