Yingluck starts work at Government House

BANGKOK, August 15 (TNA) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Monday entered her office at Thai Khu Fah building in Government House for her first day of work, vowing to strengthen ties with Southeast Asian nations to bring mutual benefits to the region.

Speaking to reporters, Yingluck said US President Barack Obama phoned her Sunday night to congratulate her on becoming the first female prime minister. She noted that the US president also said the country had attached special importance to both Thailand and ASEAN as a region.

Asked how she would restore Thailand’s leadership in ASEAN, Yingluck said the Foreign Ministry would work to improve Thailand’ stance in ASEAN and strengthen regional cooperation among ASEAN member states. She believed that there were many opportunities for regional cooperation.

She also asked the public to give the new Foreign Minister Surapong Towijakchaikul time to prove himself. She said Surapong was a knowledgeable and capable minister who devotes himself to perform his duty.

Asked how she would handle the Thai-Cambodian issues, especially their border problems, Yingluck said border problems had to be managed through negotiation and diplomatic means while her administration would work to ensure that active bilateral trade were maintained. (TNA)
