Thai PM visits flood-hit areas in Thai Northeast

BANGKOK, August 14 (TNA) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and her delegation visited flood-hit areas in Thailand’s north-eastern province of Ubon Ratchathani Sunday afternoon to offer supply to local flood victims.

Yingluck and Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Theera Wongsamut met and distributed some 500 bags of necessities to flood-stricken residents in 15 villages of Ubon Ratchathani Province’s Khong Chiam District. They also flew on a helicopter to inspect flood situations in the areas severely hit by the flooding.

Speaking to reporters later on, the Thai Premier said an aerial survey showed her that about eight square kilometers of farmland have been damaged by the inundation. She also promised to develop a long-term solution to prevent flooding there.

Meanwhile, the level of the Mekong River in Nakhon Phanom Province is slowly receding at the rate of five to seven centimeters daily. The water level was measured at 11.65 meters deep Sunday. The levels of local streams are reportedly receding as well but they still remain above the normal level.

In Phitsanulok Province, the Thai Red Cross Society delivered 1,000 bags of necessities from His Majesty the King to flood victims including Buddhist monks in Bang Rakam District. Floods still prevails in three districts adjacent to the Yom River basin namely Bang Rakam, Phrom Phiram, and Muang Phitsanulok.

In Phichit Province, Deputy Commerce Minister Siriwat Kachornprasart and the provincial governor travelled on a flat boat to hand over 500 bags of necessities to flood victims living on both sides of the Yom River. (TNA)
