Thai Army: Violence, drug problems on decline in Thai deep South
BANGKOK, August 14 (TNA) - Thailand’s Fourth Army Region Chief Lieutenant General Udomchai Thammasarorat said Sunday the violence and drug problems in the country’s southern border provinces were on a decline.
Speaking to reporters in Pattani Province Sunday morning, Lieutenant General Udomchai said the southern outpost of the Internal Security Operations Command had implemented over 300 royal development projects in the deep south in response to Her Majesty the Queen concern over the southern troubles, namely violence and narcotic problems -- which had consequently resulted in an improvement of the living conditions of local people.
The fourth army region chief noted that the anti-drug measures had been quite effective in curbing drug problems there, explaining that these projects sought to empower communities to fight against illicit drugs, educate young people about the danger of narcotics, and integrate drug abusers and addicts back into the society.
According to The fourth army region chief, more drug traffickers have also been arrested in Thailand’s Deep South.
Regarding the southern insurgency concern, Lieutenant General Udomchai said militancy was active in only 309 villages of all over 2,000 in the southern border provinces.
He said he had urged authorities to quickly improve relations with local people living in these villages and restore their confidence in the country’s legal system in order to convince them to leave arms and join forces with the authorities in developing their communities. (TNA)
