Thai prime minister continues inspecting flood-stricken areas in North and Northeast

BANGKOK, August 14 (TNA) – Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra continued with her trip to inspect flood-stricken areas in Thailand’s North and Northeast for a second consecutive day.

Speaking to reporters Sunday morning after staying overnight in Chiang Mai Province, Yingluck said she had ordered relevant ministers to work out plans to assist flood victims in Sukhothai, Phrae, and Nan provinces and instructed governors of these provinces to keep people informed of flood situations.

The Thai Premier was scheduled to visit flood-hit areas in the country’s Northeast Sunday afternoon, starting with Ubon Ratchathani province.

Meanwhile, in Sukhothai province, water-level in Yom River was rising rapidly due to continuous rains, causing another round of heavy flooding in many districts. Marine police had dispatched boats to evacuate people, particularly in areas which were submerged by two-meter-deep floodwater. Local people living along the Yom River had also been warned of possible overflows.

Flooding in Mae Chan district of Chiang Rai province remained critical. Over 500 houses and local roads had been affected by the inundation. Floodwater in some areas was measured over one-meter deep. Many roads remained impassable to small vehicles. Flooding there had already damaged over 32 square kilometers of paddy fields. (TNA)
