Japan mulls to issue entry permit for Thaksin

BANGKOK, August 13 (TNA) - Japan is considering to issue a special entry permit to ex-Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who has been in exile following a military coup in September 2006.

Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano reportedly said that Tokyo has received a request from Thaksin for the issuance of the special entry permit and will be having thorough discussions with the Thai government on the matter.

Normally, Japan does not allow the entry of anyone who has been found guilty of any crime and given a jail term of more than one year, but the Japanese justice minister can make exceptions. Thaksin reportedly hopes to visit Japan from August 22-28 with his main purpose of touring Japanese northeastern areas devastated by a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11.

Meanwhile, newly-appointed Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul acknowledged on Saturday that he had discussed Thaksin's request for the special entry to Japan with Japanese ambassador to Thailand Seiji Kochima, saying, however, whether or not Thaksin will be allowed to visit Japan rests with the Japanese government's final decision.

Regarding media reports that he was trying to return the diplomat passport to Thaksin, the new Thai foreign minister insisted that he would stick to rightness in doing so. Newly-elected Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, who is Thaksin's youngest sister, also echoed similar opinions, affirming that she will not interfere with the official procedures of both the Thai and Japanese foreign ministries.
