Thailand's preparation for AEC

BANGKOK, August 13 (TNA) - Thai Permanent Secretary for Commerce Yanyong Puangraj is representing Thailand at the 43rd ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting being held in Indonesia's northern Sulawesi Province from August 9-13, during which progress toward the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) by 2015 has been reviewed.
Yanyong said that results from the ongoing three-day regional gathering will then be further discussed by leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) at the forthcoming ASEAN Summit in November 2011, and that the meeting also acknowledged the 10-member ASEAN economy grew faster than the world economy last year.
However, Yanyong noted, the meeting has realised risk factors which may affect regional economic growth, including impacts from the ongoing financial crisis in Europe and the United States, trade and investment barriers in several countries, rising prices of food products worldwide. Therefore, ASEAN member countries need to enhance their competitiveness by strengthening their grouping through the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015.
Since the launch of the ASEAN Economic Community blueprint, ASEAN members have achieved some 73.4 per cent of their action plan set for implementations from 2008 to July 2011. But they have not yet achieved some urgent issues, including the conclusion of the 8th Package of Free Flow of Services and the implementation of the ASEAN Comprehensive Investment Agreement (ACIA) within this year to develop the atmosphere of transparency and attract investments to ASEAN.
The senior Thai official said that, the meeting has so far agreed to propose to this year's ASEAN Summit the expansion of economic grouping to East Asia and a framework for equal economic development, and that for the economic grouping expansion, ASEAN has set up four working groups to study ways for the expansion, with its conclusion set in time for this year's ASEAN Summit in November.
