Presidential office installs TV showing live images of Dokdo

SEOUL (Yonhap) - The presidential office installed a large TV at its reception desk Friday, which shows live video images of South Korea's easternmost islets of Dokdo around the clock, a symbolic gesture asserting the country's sovereignty over the rocky outcroppings.
The move came as tension flared anew between Seoul and Tokyo after Japan renewed its territorial claims to Dokdo. Earlier this month, a group of Japanese lawmakers attempted to enter South Korea in a bid to lay claim to the islets. Seoul barred their entry and the lawmakers returned to Japan after staying at an airport for hours.

On Friday, Seoul's presidential office Cheong Wa Dae set up a 40-inch LED TV at the reception desk, which shows live video images of the islets around the clock. The TV relays the images taken by surveillance cameras set up on Dokdo by the national broadcaster KBS, officials said.
"We installed the TV so that not only Cheong Wa Dae employees, but also ordinary people visiting here can watch Dokdo," an official said. "This is to publicize the matter-of-fact truth that Dokdo is our land."
Similar TVs showing images of Dokdo have been set up at the lobby of the main government complex and at some other government offices, but this is the first time that one has been installed at the presidential office.
