Seoul shares start higher on U.S. gains

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korean stocks got off to a strong start on Friday as an overnight Wall Street rally boosted investor sentiment here, analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) rose 14.54 points, 0.8 percent, to 1,831.98 in the first 15 minutes of trading.
Blue chips gained ground, with market giant Samsung Electronics rising 0.14 percent and leading steelmaker POSCO gaining 1.03 percent.
U.S. stocks rebounded on Thursday on better-than-expected job data. The Dow Jones industrial average surged 3.95 percent and the Nasdaq composite index jumped 4.69 percent.
The local currency was trading at 1,076.85 won to the U.S. dollar as of 9:15 a.m., up 4.95 won from Thursday's close.
