Pier, conveyor belt completed at joint S. Korean-Brazilian steel mill
(ATTN: CORRECTS dateline)
SEOUL (Yonhap) -- A South Korean-invested joint venture steel mill in Brazil has built a pier and a conveyor belt before starting commercial production in 2015, Dongkuk Steel Co. said Friday.
Dongkuk, South Korea's third-largest steelmaker, has a 30 percent stake in the joint venture CSP, with POSCO, the nation's largest steel producer holding 20 percent. The remaining 50 percent is owned by Brazil's mining company Vale SA.
Dongkuk said completion of the facilities is a clear sign that the joint venture plant located at the Pecem industrial complex in Brazil's Ceara province is in full swing and moving forward on schedule.
Once the first-stage construction is completed in 2015, the plant will be able to produce 3 million tons of various steel products annually. Plans are also in place to double the output down the road.
Dongkuk said the joint venture will be equipped with a blast furnace.
Dongkuk, meanwhile, said Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff attended the dedication ceremony for the pier and the conveyor belt. Dongkuk chairman Chang Sae-joo and senior POSCO executives also attended the ceremony, it said.
