Thailand's opposition leader backs bilateral talks with Cambodia

BANGKOK, August 11 (TNA) - Thailand's now opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has voiced his support for the new Pheu Thai Party-led government's policy on bilateral negotiations over unsettled border issues with neighbouring Cambodia.

Abhisit, who is a former Thai premier and the acting leader of the Democrat Party currently, suggested, however, that the new Thai government study deeply all relevant information, including legal aspects involving a pending case filed with the Hague-based International Court of Justice (ICJ) by Phnom Penh and the other pending the UN World Heritage Committee's final decision.

Abhisit said that his main opposition Democrat Party is willing to cooperate with the new Pheu Thai Party-led administration in its attempts to settle the pending Thai-Cambodian border rows related to the ancient Preah Vihear Temple for the sake of national and public interests.

The opposition leader insisted that the new Thai government employ existing bilateral mechanisms between Thailand and Cambodia in forging for the settlement of the pending border problems, as a continual move from his previous Democrat Party-led administration, namely the 2000 memorandum of understanding (MOU) on border demarcation, to ensure national and public interests, rather than following Phnom Penh's policy on relying on international stages.

The former Democrat premier's remarks were in response to a plan of newly-appointed Thai Defence Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapha to soon visit neighbouring Cambodia to discuss the pending border issues with the Cambodian government. (TNA)
