DAEGU, Aug. 11 (Yonhap) -- A culture expo featuring the millennium of history and culture of Silla (57 B.C.-A.D. 935), one of the three kingdoms of ancient Korea, will open this week in Gyeongju, its organizers said Thursday.
The 6th Gyeongju World Culture Expo will be held for two months from Friday till Oct. 10 with participation of delegations from 47 countries across the world, they said.
Gyeongju, located 371 kilometers southeast of Seoul, is the ancient capital of Silla, where today's Korean culture and history originated.
Under the theme "The Story of Millennium ??? Love, Light and Nature," this year's lineup includes more than 20 different kinds of content through about 100 events, including cultural performances, exhibits, dance and multimedia shows and a film screening, they said.
A highlight of the expo will a showing of "Byeongnucheon," a Korean film showcasing 3D animation technology. The fantasy is about the love between Silla's first queen, Seondeok, and a young man in the lowest social class.
Some other key events include a dance drama titled "Land of God, Silla" and an exhibition on the ancient kingdom's culture and history.
The 82-meter-high Gyeongju Tower, a landmark of the Gyeongju Expo Park, will be the venue of a multimedia show that revives the "moonlight night of Silla" every night during the expo period.
Every weekends, leading Korean pop musicians such as Shin Hae-cheol and YB Band will perform world music on a stage located in front of the tower.
Launched in 1998, the culture expo has attracted more than 8.5 million visitors in total, according to the expo organizing committee.
"The Gyeongju expo has been held four times in Gyeongju and once at Cambodia's Angkor Wat... This year's event will be a chance to increase the world's awareness of the splendor of Korean culture," said Kim Wang-yong, chief of the expo's organizing committee.
