MINISTER DELIVERS PRESIDENTIAL ASSISTANCE FOR PASURUAN TRAGEDY VICTIMS
Jakarta, Sept 17 (ANTARA) - Information Minister Muhammad Nuh extended on Wednesday President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's condolences and compensations to the families of the 21 victims killed in a stampede during a tithe distribution in Pasuruan, East Java, on Monday.
The minister symbolically handed over the president's compensation which was in the form of cash assistance worth Rp2.5 million for each of the dead victim to Pasuruan Mayor Pudjo Basuki.
Minister Muhammad Nuh also paid a visit to the families of a number of the victims killed in the tragedy. "My visit here is to extend the president's condolences and assistance," the minister said when he visited the family of Murniati, one of the women killed in the incident.
Twenty-one women were killed and dozens of others injured in a stampede in the remote East Java district of Pasuruan on Monday as crowds rushed to receive a cash tithe of Rp20,000 from philanthropist Syaikhon.
The local police in East Java have named H Farouk as a suspect in the tithe distribution tragedy.
National Police spokesman Insp Gen Abubakar Nataprawira said on Tuesday Farouk was a son of businessman and philanthropist H Syaikhon who was in charge of distributing the tithes.
"Farouk was the organizer of the tithe distribution," he said.
