PRESIDENT CALLS FOR SECURE DISTRIBUTION OF TITHES

Cirebon, W Java, Sept 17 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has appealed governors and heads of regional administrations to provide guidance for the people so that they would give attention to safety and orderliness in distributing tithes to the poor.

Speaking to 250 fishermen here on Wednesday, the president said that tithe distribution should not turn to chaos. On the occasion, the president provided 2,000 packages of basic necessaries to fishermen.

"There are many safe ways of distributing zakat or tithes. The government has been providing cash assistance (BLT) in an orderly way," he said.

The president said he was sad and concerned over the death of 21 people who were trampled on and killed during a stampede when poor crowds rushed to receive a tithe distribution in Pasuruan, East Java, on Monday.

"I am very sad. Twenty one people were killed. It is something that caused for concern," he said.

The head of state who was accompanied by First Lady Mrs Ani Yudhoyono said that all parties must take a lesson from the Pasuruan incident and give priority to safety before distributing alms.

Twenty-one women were killed and dozens of others injured in a stampede in the remote East Java district of Pasuruan on Monday as crowds rushed to receive a cash tithe of Rp20,000 from philanthropist Syaikhon.
