“Surapong” says diplomacy can be mastered

BANGKOK, August 10 (TNA) - Incoming Thai Foreign Minister Surapong Towijakchaikul says diplomatic skills can be acquired, and asks for an opportunity to prove himself on the job.

On Wednesday, Surapong made known the response to criticism over his foreign minister post, saying he would work on them to improve himself. He also said he was ready to learn from the people at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The newly-appointed minister noted that his priority in assuming office was in implementing the Pheu Thai Party’s foreign policy, which aimed to promote foreign trade and cooperation with neighbouring countries.

Asked if he was chosen to make way for the return of deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra to the Kingdom, Surapong genuinely admitted he was close to Thaksin, but had not been in contact for a long time.

He ruled out witholding any plot for Thaksin’s return, saying he had only learnt of his appointment the night earlier and was determined to work for the national interest. (TNA)
