New defence minister promises to uphold Thai monarchy

BANGKOK, August 10 (TNA) - Thailand's newly-appointed Defence Minister General Yuthasak Sasiprapha has promised to uphold the country's most revered royal monarchy, along with further developing the Royal Thai Armed Forces and promoting conciliation among Thai military personnel.
General Yuthasak told reporters Wednesday that he will start working at the defence portfolio on August 16 and will, thereafter, devote himself to all tasks he is now in charge of, giving his priority to achieving his three-point promise.
General Yuthasak said that after the new Puea Thai Party-led government presents its policy statement to the Thai Parliament in the coming weeks, he will also start to handle national security and public issues, including addressing insurgency-related problems in the Thai far South and border rows between Thailand and neighbouring Cambodia, as well as urgently providing needed assistance to flood victims.
The new Thai defence minister acknowledged that he plans to hold private talks with Royal Thai Armed Forces leaders as well to ensure order and confidence in national security affairs and implementations of the defence portfolio's policies and measures, including those concerning annual and transparent military reshuffles.
According to the defence minister, new Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra will directly oversee his defence portfolio and has ordered his ministry to play its vital roles on addressing and relieving public problems, namely urgent assistance provided to people in widespread areas affected by the current round of floods.
