Need to roll out joint strategy to avoid crisis: PRGMEA Chairman

Karachi, August 08, 2011 (PPI): Chairman Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers & Exporters Association PRGMEA Ijaz A. Khokhar asked support from textile industry stakeholders in generating demand for bumper cotton crop to avoid crisis ahead.

He urged textile industry stakeholders including cotton growers, ginners, spinners, weavers, processors to join hands in pursuing government for uninterrupted power supply to value added industry which will generate demand for bumper cotton crop, ultimately averting upcoming crisis, he contended.

He said present global economic meltdown due to United States and European Union debt crisis is likely to hit hard textile products prices further and there is urgent need of joint strategy. “I already sent letters to textile industry stakeholders, asking for a roundtable conference on prevailing crisis like situation.”

He said power demand of value added textile industry was about 500MW. Uninterrupted power supply to woven garment, knitwear units would activate whole textile industry. International buyers still rely heavily on Pakistani garment exports due to their quality and timely delivery, which is rare combination among competitors of Pakistan garment industry.

Khokhar feared undue delay in timely uninterrupted power supply to value added textile industry would not only cause trouble for cotton farmers but industry labour also face hardships. He hoped textile industry stakeholders support his proposal and plan out joint strategy in larger interest of textile industry and national economy.
