MILLI MAJLIS VICE-SPEAKER MEETS DELEGATION OF POLITICAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE OF ASSEMBLY OF WESTERN EUROPEAN UNION

Baku,17 September,(AzerTAj)Vice-Speaker of the Azerbaijan Milli Majlis (Parliament) Ziyafat Asgarov met Tuesday with visiting delegation of Political Affairs Committee of the Assembly of Western European Union.

Mr. Asgarov briefed the delegation on ongoing processes in Azerbaijan, international relations of the Milli Majlis and other issues.

According to him, Azerbaijan is a leader country in the South Caucasus region for its dynamic development. He stressed significant steps had been taken on the initiative of Azerbaijan for security of both the region and Europe. Asgarov also noted Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas pipelines, as well as Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway play an important role in ensuring energy security.

On the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the Vice-Speaker noted Armenia occupied a part of Azerbaijan`s territory in the wake of which more than one million people were driven off their native lands. He added Armenia does not honor the UN Security Council-adopted resolutions on
unconditional withdrawal of all the occupied territories. Head of the delegation Michael Hancock, in turn, praised accomplishments achieved in Azerbaijan. He stressed Azerbaijan had a great potential in terms of political, economic and security issues. “We hope the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will be settled soon and Azerbaijan will safely transport its energy resources to European markets” added Michael Hancock.

The meeting also discussed the October 15 presidential election, situation in the South Caucasus and other issues.
