Bangkok reopens “Sanam Luang” to public

BANGKOK, August 9 (TNA) - The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) officially reopened Sanam Luang area on Tuesday after having undergone major renovation since July 2010.
Bangkok Governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra chaired the morning inaugural ceremony, during which he led state representatives and the public to give alms to 1,985 Buddhist monks, before worshiping the image of Phra Siam Devadhiraj and past Thai monarchs.
Speaking at the ceremony, Sukhumbhand said Sanam Luang will now open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily as a leisure ground, adding that a footpath connecting the opposite roads in front of Thammasat University and the Supreme Court will be open on a 24-hour basis.
Regarding the use of Sanam Luang for organizing onsite activities, Sukhumbhand said the BMA has passed a new regulation limiting the site for only official use. He noted political activities and trading will also be strictly prohibited within the area, with violators facing up to 10 years imprisonment, or a fine of up to 1 million baht, or both.
In the meantime, the BMA has erected temporary fences around the compound to prevent intrusion to the park and preserve its beauty alongside with the Grand Palace and the Emerald Buddha Temple. (TNA)
