Measures in good place to cope with floods in Thailand's central plains
BANGKOK, August 8 (TNA) - Thai caretaker agriculture and cooperatives minister Theera Wongsamut said on Monday that there should not be any critical flooding in Thailand's central plain areas, located downstream of the major Chao Phraya Dam, this week as some have feared, thanks to well-prepared measures launched by agencies concerned.
Theera acknowledged that his ministry's Royal Irrigation Department is utilizing both the Chao Phraya Dam and well-managed irrigation systems to prevent heavy floods in riverside and other low lying downstream areas in Thailand's central region, namely Ayutthaya and Angthong Provinces.
Given the well-prepared measures, the minister said, flows of upstream water passing through the Chao Phraya Dam have now been limited to no more than 2,000 million cubic metres per second.
Regarding widespread inundations in the Thai North and Northeast currently, the minister assessed that floodwater would remain in several provinces for months, particularly those in repeatedly flooded zones.
According to the minister, Bangkok's Mahidol University has been authorised to gather relevant information from all parties concerned, including local people through public hearing forums, on a proposed plan on the construction of the large-scaled Kaeng Sua Ten Dam to prevent and relieve inundation-related problems in the country's central region.
