People’s organizations submit demand to new Thai government

BANGKOK, August 8 (TNA) - Members of people’s organizations on Monday called on the new Thai government to resolve land ownership problems and raise wages.

The petition was jointly submitted by members of the land reform network, the slums community network, the network of stateless Thai people, the Assembly of the Poor, the community network for social and political reform and the labor solidarity network, who gathered at the Royal Plaza in Bangkok before moving to the parliament house to meet with a representative from the Pheu Thai Party.

They called on the new government to support projects that promote community rights and land banks, and for amnesty against farmers who were charged with illegal exploitation of natural resources.

The slums community network and the Assembly of the Poor, in part, urged the government to allocate unused land to the poor, especially those held under the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), besides calling for more transparency in land ownerships.

The labor solidarity network meanwhile, demanded for a minimum daily wage hike to 300 baht, saying they would march to the Pheu Thai Party headquarters to meet prime minister-elect Yingluck Shinawatra if their voices were unheard. (TNA)
