Typhoon Muifa nears Seoul after hitting island
(ATTN: UPDATES in para 3, 5)
SEOUL, Aug. 7 (Yonhap) -- Typhoon Muifa is traveling northward toward the South Korean capital of Seoul after wreaking havoc on the country's southernmost island on Sunday, as the Korean meteorological office issued warnings and advisories nationwide.
Muifa, the ninth typhoon of the year spawned in the West Pacific, was moving northwest along the west coast of South Korea Sunday, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.
The country's central region is expected to come under the typhoon's influence by Sunday night, and typhoon advisories came into effect at 9:00 p.m. in Seoul, the surrounding province of Gyeonggi and the nearby city of Incheon, the office said. A typhoon advisory is a notch below a warning.
As of 6:00 p.m., Muifa was heading northward from waters 230 kilometers southwest of Mokpo in the southernmost province of Jeolla at a speed of 22km per hour, according to the meteorological office.
A 75-year-old man was found dead on the island of Wando, located at the southern tip of the province, one hour after going missing while trying to moor a 1-ton ship in stormy seas.
The typhoon battered Jeju Island, a tourist destination in the country's southernmost reaches, leaving nearly 20,000 households without electricity. The typhoon brought a total of 291.5 millimeters of rain by 5:00 p.m., record-high precipitation for an August day on the island, the weather office said.
As many as 470 flights between Seoul and Jeju were canceled Sunday due to the heavy downpours and strong winds.
Nine flights departing from Incheon International Airport bound for southeastern Chinese cities were also grounded, according to airport officials.
The typhoon is expected to continue northwest to hit Dalian, China, by Monday night.
As of 7:00 p.m., the KMA issued typhoon warnings for all the cities, counties and islands in South Jeolla Province. Warnings were also posted for Jeju Island, the southern part of the Yellow Sea and the western waters of the South Sea.
The agency issued typhoon advisories that would start from 9:00 p.m. in the central province of South Chungcheong, including the metropolitan city of Daejeon, as well as North Jeolla Province and five western islands.
By Monday, Seoul and its satellite cities will experience downpours of up to 80mm with strong winds, the KMA said.
