S. Korea's IT exports dip 3.2 pct in July

SEOUL (Yonhap) - South Korea's exports of information and technology (IT) products fell 3.2 percent on-year in July on seasonal factors and price cuts in memory chips and display panels, the government said Sunday.
The country exported US$13.12 billion worth of IT products last month, according to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy. The country's trade surplus in the IT sector came to $6.44 billion for the month.
The growth in July marks the fifth consecutive month in which outbound shipments exceeded $13 billion and the surplus surpassed the $6 billion mark.
Shipments of mobile phones roses 15.1 percent on-year to 2.18 billion in July, underpinned by improved competitiveness of South Korea's smartphones and sluggish performances of rival companies such as Nokia Corp. of Finland.
Exports of semiconductors dropped 12.4 percent from a year earlier to $4.04 billion. The drop is attributable to a fall in prices of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, the ministry said.
Weak prices of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels also dragged down the shipments to $2.52 billion, extending their losing streak to six months.
By region, shipments to China, including Hong Kong, rose 3.3 percent from a year earlier to $6.44 billion with exports to Japan going up 1.2 percent to $750 million.
Shipments to Europe dropped 25.6 percent on-year to $1.14 billion and exports to the United States fell 21.1 percent to $1.32 billion, apparently due to economic uncertainties there, said the ministry.
"Exports of IT products will rebound in the second half on brisk seasonal demand," said the ministry in a statement. "The IT exports will reach an all-time high of $160 billion won for the entire year of 2011."
