Thailand raises minimum penalty on employers, illegal immigrant workers

BANGKOK, August 6 (TNA) - Thai labour authorities have announced that local employers who hire illegal immigrant workers and the illegal immigrants themselves will now face an additional 5,000-baht-fine each under Thailand's existing minimum labour penalty benchmarks.

Suthasinee Suebwongpaet, Director-General of the Thai Ministry of Labour’s Department of Employment, acknowledged that the offenders, both the local employers and the immigrant workers from neighbouring countries, who are found guilty will now face the increased minimum fine of 15,000 baht each, from 10,000 baht each previously.

Suthasinee said the decision is part of the Thai government’s latest efforts to contain illegal workers in the Kingdom, whose entries are feared to soar in the wake of the in-coming government’s 300-baht-a-day minimum wage hike. So far, six local employers and one illegal immigrant worker have been fined under the stricter measure.

Under Thailand’s Alien Employment Act 2008, before the revision, local employers found guilty of hiring and habouring illegal immigrant workers each faced a minimum fine of 10,000 baht per one illegal immigrant, but not exceeding 100,000 baht each and second-time offenders would be given double penalty.
