ANWAR LIES TO THE PEOPLE, SAY POLITICIANS

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 17 (Bernama) -- Leaders of National Front (Barisan
Nasional) (BN) component parties Tuesday described the failure of People's Justice Party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) (PKR) advisor Anwar Ibrahim to fulfil his promise to form a new government Tuesday as a proof that he had lied to the people.

They said the failure showed that Anwar was a leader with no
credibility.

His actions had also brought nothing but problems to the people and
country,
they said.

Umno Vice-President Mohd Ali Rustam said the people should now get
back to work rather than be engrossed in listening to Anwar's theatrics about
forming a new government.

He said the time has come for the people to no longer pay attention to what
Anwar had to say as it was only a waste of time.

"With the date Sept 16 coming to pass, it is clear that what has been
mentioned (about forming new government) is just play-acting," he said.
Umno supreme council member Mohd Shafie Apdal also dismissed as mere
lies the claims by Anwar about having a list of BN crossovers.

"This is the Ramadan month, an auspicious month... let's not create a
situation that can affect the people's confidence," said Shafie who is also
Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister.

Umno information chief Muhammad Muhd Taib also said that Anwar's
failure to form the new government Tuesday (Sept 16) showed that he had no
credibility and was only out to create trouble.

"He is desperate to grab power in an unethical way; this goes to show that
he is hungry for power," he said.

Cheras Umno division chief Syed Ali AlHabshee said Anwar had lied about
forming the government as well as about having 31 BN members of parliament
crossing over to the opposition.

Syed Ali said the time has come for the government to stop Anwar's antics
as they could threaten the country's political and economic stability.

Meanwhile, MCA challenged Anwar to reveal the name of BN MPs whom he
claimed would be crossing over to People's Alliance (Pakatan Rakyat).

"If he has the names, reveal it now. Who are they... why is he being so
secretive?" MCA president Ong Ka Ting said.

Ong who had earlier chaired the party's central committee meeting at Wisma
MCA here also called on Anwar to stop making further speculations on the
defection and on his purported "majority" to form the government.

He said Anwar should stop crying wolf as the people no longer believed
him.

MIC President S. Samy Vellu also said that Anwar's claim that he
had 31 BN defectors was merely a "sandiwara" (play-acting). "He had stated this
many times. He should have gone ahead if he really has the 31 MPs."

Liberal Democratic Party president V.K. Liew lambasted Anwar for
"bluffing" the people.

"By continuing to bluff the people in saying that he has the number
when he has none, he has been deceitful, and undermined the intelligence of the
Malaysian public," he said.

He added that Anwar and People's Alliance (Pakatan Rakyat) leaders had
proven to be untrustworty and unrighteous in their continued efforts to
destabilise a legitimate BN government "elected by the people, to the people and
for the people".

DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang said a majority of people in the country
wanted a change of government.

"Whether it happens on Sept 16, tomorrow or even before the next general
election, it doesn't matter... what is important is that the people are yearning
for change."

In KUANTAN, Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar said Anwar should go
about it the right way if he wanted to become prime minister and not by
deceiving the people.

"Anwar has got a strong imagination, he had better follow the right
path in trying to become a prime minister and not take short cuts by cheating
the people," he told reporters after breaking fast with staff of the National
Anti-Drugs Agency and Civil Defence Department, here Tuesday.

He added that it was an act of cowardice on Anwar's part that the latter
feared revealing the names of National Front (Barisan Nasional) MPS whom he
claimed would defect to the opposition.

Kuantan is the state capital of east coast Pahang, the largest state in
Peninsular Malaysia.
